The multi-party agreement required the parties to “use all the influences they might have” to obtain the dismantling of all paramilitary weapons within two years of the adoption of the agreement by referendums. The standardization process has forced the British government to reduce the number and role of its armed forces in Northern Ireland “to a level compatible with a normal peaceful society.” These include the elimination of security measures and the abolition of special emergency powers in Northern Ireland. The Irish government has pledged to conduct a “thorough review” of its violations of national law. As part of the agreement, the British Parliament repealed the Government of Ireland Act 1920 (which had founded Northern Ireland, divided Ireland and asserted territorial right to the whole of Ireland) and the people of the Republic of Ireland amended Articles 2 and 3 of the Irish Constitution, which asserted a territorial right to Northern Ireland. The agreement came after many years of complex discussions, proposals and compromises. A lot of people have made a great contribution. Tony Blair and Bertie Ahern were the leaders of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland at the time. The presidency was chaired by U.S. Special Envoy George Mitchell. Regardless of northern Ireland`s constitutional status within the United Kingdom or part of a united Ireland, the right of the “people of Northern Ireland” to “accept themselves as Irish or British or both” (as well as their right of British or Irish citizenship, or both) has been recognized. The words “people of Northern Ireland” means “all persons who were born in Northern Ireland and who have at least one relative at the time of their birth, British national, Irish citizen or entitled to stay in Northern Ireland without limitation of their stay” The Good Friday Agreement, also known as the Belfast Agreement , was signed on Good Friday on April 10, 1998 , signed. It consists of two closely linked agreements, the Anglo-Irish Agreement and the Multi-Party Agreement. It led to the creation of a decentralised system of government in Northern Ireland and the creation of many new institutions, such as the Northern Ireland Assembly and Executive, the North South South Ministerial Council and the British Irish Council.
Both views have been recognized as legitimate. For the first time, the Irish government agreed, in a binding international agreement, that Northern Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. The Irish Constitution has also been amended to implicitly recognize Northern Ireland as part of the sovereign territory of the United Kingdom provided that the majority of the population of the island`s two jurisdictions has agreed to a unified Ireland.
